파파고, 구글 번역기, ChatGPT, DeepL 번역 비교

요즘 인터넷으로 번역을 할 수 있는 기능이 많아졌습니다. 

저는 전부터 제가 만든 스토리를 번역하고 싶어 했으므로 이런 쪽에 늘 관심이 많고 궁금했습니다.

그래서 각자 성능이 어느 정도일까 궁금해서 번역해서 비교해보려합니다.

 

오늘은 파파고, 구글 번역기, 챗지피티(chatgpt),딥엘(deepl)을 비교·대조 해보려고 합니다.

그리고 이 게시글은 한국어를 영어로 번역하는 부분을 다룰 겁니다.

또한 제가 번역한 것(엉망이지만...)과 어떤 차이가 있는 지도 비교해보려합니다.

 

원문은 제가 쓴 캣츠비안나이트 소설의 1부 1화 일부분입니다(고로 제가 원작자니 저작권 걱정ㄴㄴ).

 개나리가 막 움트기 시작한 꽃샘추위가 완연한 어느 날이었다.
 주택가에 개나리가 심어진 화단 앞에서 등과 머리에 회색 무늬가 있는 고양이 한 마리가 조용히 눈을 감고 졸고 있었다.

 "고양이다!"

 그 목소리에 천천히 한 쪽 눈을 뜨며 말했다.

 "…뭐냐옹?"
 "어? 고양이가 말해!"

 아이가 깜짝 놀라며 말했다.
 고양이 앞에는 자신보다도 그리 크지 않은 아이가 서 있었다. 얼마나 어린지 발음도 아직 분명치 않았다.

 고양이는 그 아이가 자신의 말을 알아듣는 것이 신기한지 아니면 눈앞에 있는 것이 신기한지, 감고 있던 다른 쪽 눈도 마저 뜨고 말했다.

 "신기한 꼬마네. 여기서 뭐하냐옹?"
 "어린이집."

 아이가 고양이 앞쪽 길 건너의 유치원을 가리키며 말했다.

 "…밖에 나와도 되는 거냐옹?"

 고양이는 아이가 어린이집에서 놀다가 멋대로 나온 것이라 생각했는지 살짝 걱정스러운 말투로 물었다.

 "엄마가 어린이집 갈 거래."

 아이의 말에 고양이는 아직 저기에 다니는 건 아니구나 하고 생각했다.

 "이제 새로 다닐거냐옹?"
 "응. 근데 못 간데. 엄마가 일해야 되는데 비싸서……."
 "?"

 아이가 아직 너무 어려서 낮은 언어 능력을 가진 탓에 고양이는 아이의 말을 이해하기 힘들었다.

 "Yep. But, I can't. Mom have to work, but expensive……."

 The kid have a low language level cause too immature. So it was hard to understand her words to cat.

 

 

 어떠신가요?

 저는 지금까지 각자 따로 볼 때는 그냥 어렴풋이 '아마도 좀 차이 나겠지.' 하는 정도로 두루뭉술하고 애매한 정도로만 생각하고 있었습니다.

 근데 한 자리에 놓고보니 차이가 확 보여서 신기했습니다.

 일단 기본적으로 제가 쓴 소설이 문장이 좋지가 않습니다. 초반부라 더 개판입니다. 그래서 ai가 학습하기엔 짜증나는 문장일거라 생각합니다. 하지만 어쨌든 나름 잘 해내는 모습들을 보니 기술의 발전을 실감하고 있습니다.

 

 그럼 눈에 띄는 점을 하나씩 비교해보겠습니다(일단 제가 한 건 빼고 보겠습니다 전 영어를 잘 못하니까요).

 

 일단 가장 눈에 띄는 건, 파파고와 구글 번역기는 문맥 파악을 못하네요.

 "…밖에 나와도 되는 거냐옹?" 이라는 문장을 고양이 자신이 나가도 되냐로 인식하는 모습입니다.

 

  그리고 챗지피티는 파파고와 구글 번역기에 비해서는 훨씬 더 낫긴합니다. 하지만 역시 맥락 파악이 안 되는 부분이 있습니다.  "엄마가 어린이집 갈 거래."라는 부분입니다. 챗지피티는 이걸 "My mom is going to the preschool." 라고 번역했습니다.

 

 고양이 말투를 잘 살린 건 딥엘이 가장 나아보이긴 합니다. 그나마 좀 일관성이 있습니다. 챗지피티도 나쁘진 않지만 딥엘보다 일관성이 더 떨어져 보입니다.

 다만, 챗지피티는 좀 더 구어체적인 느낌이 강해서 일반적인 대화에는 더 적합해 보입니다.

 

 "…뭐냐옹?"  "어? 고양이가 말해!" 이 두 대사를 보면,

 

파파고 "...What is it?"  "Huh? The cat says!"

구글 번역기  “…What?”  "Huh? The cat speaks!"

챗지피티  "...Meow, what's up?"  "Huh? The cat is talking!"

딥엘 "...Meow?"  "Huh? A cat talks!"

 

 이렇게 됩니다.

 파파고와 구글은 직역 느낌입니다. 챗지피티는 확실히 구어 느낌이 강합니다. 딥엘은  "…뭐냐옹?"을 아예 "...Meow?"처리 했는데, 이걸 부드럽게 번역이 됐다고 봐야 할 지 아니면 누락이라고 봐야될 지는 모르겠습니다. 부드럽게 됐다면, 의역 느낌이라고 봐야 될 것 같습니다.

 

 그렇다면 어휘는 어떨까요?

  "어린이집" 이라는 대사를 살펴보면,

 

파파고  "Kindergarten."

구글 번역기  "Day care Center."

챗지피티  "Preschool."

딥엘  "Daycare."

 

로 번역됐습니다.

 다만 의문인건, 예전에 제가 chatGPT에서 사용을 했을 때는 nursery school로 제안 받아서 Kindergarten을 nursery school로 수정했습니다.

 근데 이번에는 결과값이 다르게 나왔습니다.

 왜 바뀌었는지는 모르겠습니다. 그 동안 새 정보를 받아들여서일까요? 

 

다음은 길이가 좀 긴 문장의 번역도 살펴보겠습니다(아주 길진 않습니다).

 '고양이는 그 아이가 자신의 말을 알아듣는 것이 신기한지 아니면 눈앞에 있는 것이 신기한지, 감고 있던 다른 쪽 눈도 마저 뜨고 말했다.' 라는 문장의 번역입니다. 짜증나는 문장이죠? 이제 번역한 것들을 봅시다.

일단  해석 시 성별 구분의 문제는 그러려니 합시다. 주어진 정보가 없으니까요

 일단 파파고는 눈을 감겨버리네요. 저런.

 구글 번역기는 뭔 소린지 모르겠습니다. 제 영어 실력이 모자라서인지 아니면 그냥 문장 복잡해져서인지 모르겠지만, 저는 이해가 안됩니다. 이게 원어민한테는 어떻게 읽힐지 궁금해지네요. 일단 눈을 떴다는 의미는 전달됐는지…?

 챗지피티는 일단 눈을 떴습니다. 그리고 적어도 파파고와 구글번역기보다는 훨씬 자연스럽게 읽힙니다. 챗 지피티는 딥엘에 비해서 '어느 쪽' 때문에 놀란건지 모르겠다는 점에 초점을 맞추고 번역한 듯 합니다.

 딥엘도 눈을 떴습니다. 챗지피티와 차이가 있다면, whether을 사용하지 않고 어느 쪽 때문에 놀랐다는 건지 '모르겠다'는 점에 주안점을 둔 것 같습니다. 역시나 파파고나 구글에 비하면 훨씬 자연스럽습니다.

 

 개인적으로 챗지피티나 딥엘은 이 정도면 꽤 괜찮게 번역된 것 같습니다. 제 나름대로는 꽤 만족합니다. 특히나 컴퓨터 번역임을 감안하면 상당히 깔끔한 편이라고 생각합니다.

 그리고 기본적으로 원본 문장이 짜증나니까요. 제가 번역할 때도 짜증났거든요.

 

 이쯤되면 저는 어떻게 번역했나 하고 궁금하실 것 같아서 제가 번역한 문장도 위에서 갖고왔습니다.

 전 그냥 통으로 번역하는 걸 포기했습니다ㅎㅎ 못하겠더라고요ㅎㅎ 

 아마 사람 번역가라면 이걸 보고 욕할 것 같습니다. 아니, 문장 저렇게 적어놓고 막상 지가 번역하니까 저런다고? 라고 말이죠.

 근데 뭐라해봐야 소용없습니다. 왜냐면 제가 원작자니까. 하하. 

 

 

 지금까지 몇 번의 번역 테스트(파파고나 구글은 평소에도 씀.아래는 챗지피티 위주)와 이번에 인터넷 번역을 비교해보며 확실히 체감한 부분이 있습니다.

 뭐가 됐든 양 언어를 어느 정도 쓸 줄 아는 상태로 써야된다 하는 점입니다. 이번에 특히 더 확 깨달았습니다.

  그래서 몇 번 사용해보니, 그냥 번역해서 대충 적당히 수정하고 던져놓기엔(제 희망사항이었는데 말이죠) 아직 안되겠구나 하는 생각이 계속 들었습니다(위에 링크 건 소설이 특히 그랬음 그냥 쭉 하고 한두부분만 고쳤더니 전체적으로 들쭉날쭉함).

 

 여기까지 쓰니 지적이 많아서 혹평만 있는 것 같네요.

 '그럼 사용하기에 별로? 안 쓸겁니까?' 라는 질문을 던진다면, 저는 바로 '아니요, 쓰긴 쓸겁니다' 라고 대답할 겁니다.

 

 제 노력과 시간 대비 나오는 결과물에 비하면 가성비가 압도적입니다. 

 인터넷 번역들은 길어도 몇 초면 번역 끝나는데, 저는 영어를 잘 못하다보니 제가 직접 한 번역은 시간 엄청 잡아먹었습니다. 그리고 그렇게 시간 투자했는데도 엉망인 번역이 뽑혔습니다. 생산성이 비교가 안됩니다.

 

 제가 이 비교글을 위해서 번역한 게 아니거나, 혹은 다른 목적이 있어서 하는 게 아니었다면?

 오로지 글을 번역한다는 게 목적인데 영어를 잘 하지도 못하는 제가 번역한다? 그냥 시간 낭비입니다.

 그 시간에 다른 일 하거나 쉬는게 훨씬 낫습니다. 그만큼 인터넷 번역기들은 시간을 엄청 벌어줍니다.

 물론, 가장 좋은 건 아마 전문 번역가분들께 의뢰하는게 좋겠죠.

 

 문제는 돈입니다. 돈을 생각 안 할 수가 없습니다. 큰 돈이 없는 상황이고, 어찌됐든 내가 계속 손보고 싶어하는 유형이라면 상당히 유용해 보입니다. 특히 타인한테 이거 저거 해달라 요구하는걸 안 좋아하시는 분들이나, 내가 원하는 대로 나와야 직성이 풀리는 분들이라면 더 그럴 거라 생각합니다.

 

 그리고 전에 챗지피티 게시글(위 링크)에서도 썼던 말인데, 1차 번역으로는 아주 유용하게 써먹을 것 같습니다.

 최소한 어떤 단어가 쓰이는 지 확인이라도 할 수 있습니다. 파파고든 구글 번역기든 ai 기반이든 간에 도움 받아서 내가 새로 쓰거나 갈아엎을 수라도 있습니다. 혹은 비슷한 어휘를 검색해서 바꿀 수라도 있습니다.

 또한 대충 어떻게 시작 할 지 방향성 확인하는 부분에서도 도움됩니다. 엎을 때 엎더라도 말이죠. 아예 감도 안 잡혀서 이도 저도 못하는 상황과는 큰 차이가 납니다. 맨땅에 헤딩하는 것과 차이가 큽니다.

 특히 ai는 큰 틀에서 교정하는데는 상당히 도움됩니다.

1. 어느 번역기든 애매한 영어 실력을 가진 사람이 직접 번역하려 하면 매우 시간 절약됨.

2. 챗지피티나 딥엘이나 1차 번역으로는 나쁘지 않음. 스타일 차이 있음. 

3. 상당히 쓸만한 건 맞지만, 인공지능에만 맡겨두기엔 부족한듯. 어쨌든 수정해야 됨. 내가 양 언어를 할 줄 알아야 된다.

4.돈 열심히 벌고 공부도 열심히 하겠습니다.
